On December 16, the 72,000-ton multipurpose vessel “GREEN NAGOYA” was busy loading at Qingdao Port. As the inaugural ship of COSCO Shipping Special Transport’s new Southeast Africa direct weekly route, it carried over 20,000 cubic meters of goods, including engineering vehicles, equipment, and steel. The vessel will traverse 6,550 nautical miles to reach Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in about 20 days.
A launch ceremony for this new service was held in Qingdao, co-hosted by COSCO Shipping Special Transport and Shandong Port Group. This marks the introduction of a new product in COSCO Shipping’s “Belt and Road” service lineup, aimed at improving logistics efficiency and reducing comprehensive costs for partners. Qingdao Port has now become a hub for COSCO’s general cargo liner services in northern China.
A New Maritime Connection
The new route links Asia with East and South Africa, with starting points including Qingdao, Zhangjiagang, and Lianyungang, and destinations such as Dar es Salaam, Mombasa, and Durban. With four sailings per month and an estimated annual cargo capacity of 1.5 million cubic meters, this service establishes a “maritime highway” for general cargo trade between China and Southeast Africa.
Six Key Advantages
The Southeast Africa direct route offers six significant benefits:
- Weekly Services: Reliable and consistent schedules.
- Direct Shipping: One-port loading and unloading.
- Technical Assurance: High safety standards.
- Smart Logistics: Integration of digital and physical networks.
- Green Fleet: Environmentally friendly operations.
- Customizable Services: End-to-end tailored logistics solutions.
COSCO’s advanced fleet and green technology enhance industrial competitiveness and streamline economic cycles.
Supporting Customers and Sustainability
Jiang Mingzhong, Vice President of XCMG Machinery, stated, “This product enhances our connection with clients, offering efficient, diverse, and reliable customized services. It also boosts supply chain efficiency and market competitiveness.”
COSCO Shipping Special Transport also prioritizes social responsibility, aligning with China’s “dual carbon” goals. Its modern fleet meets strict energy efficiency and carbon emission standards. Compared to older ships, the latest multipurpose vessels reduce carbon emissions by over 40% on equivalent routes. For instance, on a 5,000-nautical-mile East Africa route, transporting 10,000 tons of goods cuts carbon emissions by 380.4 tons.
This initiative not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also lowers logistics and operational costs, achieving both economic and social benefits.
